September Landscaping in Tampa Bay: Hurricane Prep, Storm Cleanup & Fall Transition
Why September Matters for Tampa Bay Landscapes
September is the heart of hurricane season here in Lutz, Land O' Lakes, and across the Tampa Bay area. It's also one of our wettest months, with heavy afternoon storms and the ever-present threat of tropical systems. A little preparation now can save you thousands in storm damage and set your landscape up for a beautiful fall.
1. Hurricane-Proof Your Trees and Shrubs
Before the next storm warning hits:
- Inspect large trees for dead limbs, cracks, or leaning trunks — especially live oaks and mature pines common in our area
- Prune weak branches that could become projectiles in high winds
- Remove trees that are too close to your house, driveway, or power lines
- Stake young trees loosely so they can flex in the wind without snapping
Pro Tip: Need land cleared or large debris hauled off after a storm? Our tractor work and dump truck services are available throughout Pasco and Hillsborough counties.
2. Secure Loose Materials
Walk your yard and secure or store:
- Potted plants and hanging baskets
- Lawn furniture and decor
- Loose gravel, mulch piles, or fill dirt (cover with a tarp)
- Construction materials
Flying debris causes more damage than wind itself in most Florida storms.
3. Check Your Drainage — Again
September rains are no joke. If you noticed standing water during our summer storms, now is the time to fix it before the next tropical system arrives:
- Re-grade low spots with fill dirt so water flows away from your foundation
- Clear culverts and ditches of leaves and debris
- Add river rock to erosion-prone areas to slow runoff
- Extend downspouts at least 5 feet from the house
4. Storm Cleanup: What to Do After the Rain Stops
Once a storm passes:
- Remove fallen branches promptly to prevent lawn damage
- Re-stack displaced mulch and rock before it washes further
- Fill washed-out areas with fresh fill dirt — don't wait, erosion gets worse with each rain
- Inspect tree roots for exposure; add soil and mulch to stabilize
5. Start Your Fall Transition
Even though it's still hot, September is the time to start planning your fall landscape:
- Refresh mulch — a fresh 2-3 inch layer protects roots and suppresses late-season weeds
- Plan fall plantings — October is ideal for installing new shrubs and trees in Florida
- Topdress garden beds with compost and topsoil
- Order materials now — demand spikes after every storm, so beat the rush
